A scam has emerged asking victims to download an app on their mobile phones or other devices; by doing so, they end up losing money.
According to the victims, they received text messages on their phones advising them that they would be charged for a purchase on Amazon. In the text, victims are provided with a free phone number to cancel the purchase. The victims, who never made the purchase on Amazon, called the toll-free number to cancel the charges. When they called the number to cancel the order, a subject posing as an Amazon employee connects them with someone posing as an Amazon fraud specialist. By speaking to the subject posing as the fraud specialist, victims are directed to download the Anydesk Remote app on their phones, so the fraud specialist can help cancel transactions. The Anydesk Remote app provides the impersonator with access to the victim’s mobile phone, including bank and other accounts stored on the device. Once access is granted through the Anydesk Remote app, the phishers have stolen various amounts of money from the victims.
AnyDesk Scam Isn’t Possible If You Know This
When used correctly, AnyDesk is a secure solution for establishing access to a remote computer or mobile device. It uses the same type of encryption to keep your data safe that a bank uses to protect your account details. The following security features are built into AnyDesk.
• All connections are verified using RSA 2048 asymmetric key exchange encryption.
• AES 256-bit transport encryption is used to prevent third parties from accessing your data.
AnyDesk: the good and the bad
AnyDesk has its redeeming qualities, but it also falls short in some ways. Here’s the best and worst of what AnyDesk has to offer:
Quick and easy setup – You don’t need to install AnyDesk on your machine to use the software. Just download the file and click on it to run the software in portable mode. You can also install the program to unlock more features, such as custom aliases.
How to avoid an AnyDesk Scam
These tips to protect your personal information, banking information and money are common to avoid any scam.
Never give access to your device to anyone you don’t know. If someone calls you from IT or a computer software company, don’t be a victim. Hang. Look up the number and call directly.
Never share device passwords with another person, even a trusted co-worker.
Change passwords regularly on your device and on your various accounts, such as your credit card company and bank. Consider using a password monitoring service. With such a service, you will have one master password and the service will automatically change all of your passwords at times of your choosing.
Look closely at URLs before clicking as this is a common scam. The URL looks familiar, but there will be something different, like a misspelling.
In the event of phone calls, text messages or emails that seek to connect with you and inform you of a computer or internet problem. That is another common scam.
Update your antivirus regularly to keep all your devices safe.
As soon as you realize that you are the victim of a scam and someone has access to your data, make a report. Let your company’s IT department know if you’ve been working remotely, and let your bank know. Cancel debit and credit cards. Put a freeze on your bank accounts. Change your passwords.
Microsoft Remote Desktop among the most notable free competitors to AnyDesk because it is so popular and easy to use. However, it generally has more limited functionality than AnyDesk. This solution works similarly to Chrome Remote Desktop: simply install the client on your computer, and if you want to use the mobile app, download the app from your mobile device’s app store. This will allow you to connect your devices and establish remote access, with streaming video and audio (just like with AnyDesk). A key benefit of using Microsoft Remote Desktop is that you don’t need a Google Chrome installation for this tool to work on Windows devices.
